Many businesses use “agentic AI” and “artificial general intelligence (AGI)” interchangeably. But they don’t have the same definitions and processes. One can already reason—the other is theoretical.
As a small or medium-sized business (SMB), knowing their differences matters. It helps set your expectations right on what AI can do. It allows you to plan tools and workflows for future AI developments without falling into “innovation paralysis.”
In this article, you will learn the differences between agentic AI and AGI, from scope to autonomy. You will also know the importance of human oversight when using agentic AI.
What is agentic AI?
Agentic AI is a system powered by a large language model (LLM) with a degree of autonomy to achieve a specific goal. Instead of just generating text, an AI agent uses reasoning to determine which steps to take and which tools to use. It can also learn how to recover when something goes wrong.
You can think of it as giving a brain (the LLM) hands (tools), a mission (your prompt), and a feedback loop.
To be considered agentic, a system must have the following abilities:
- Reasoning and planning. This refers to the ability to take a complex goal, such as “find the best flight within my budget and add it to my calendar,” and break it down into a sequence of smaller tasks.
- Tool use. This allows the AI to interact with the outside world. For example, it can search the web or run code. It can also access third-party APIs.
- Self-correction. This is the ability to loop. For example, an agent tries to access a website and gets a 404 error. The AI agent doesn’t just stop. Instead, it realizes the failure and tries a different search query or source.
Agentic AI is like a highly trained intern with a checklist. It is very good at following the checklist and using the office equipment. But it still works within predefined rules.
What is artificial general intelligence (AGI)?
AGI is a theoretical form of AI that would be able to learn, understand, and apply intelligence to any problem a human being can solve.
An agentic system often requires a human to configure new tools or integrations for tasks outside its original scope. AGI would possess the architectural plasticity to autonomously synthesize new skills.
In other words, it wouldn’t just follow a checklist. It would understand the principles behind the task. This would allow it to move from writing code to designing a physical engine without manual reconfiguration.
To qualify as AGI, a system must move beyond pattern matching and enter the realm of true cognition. Most experts agree it would require:
- Cross-domain learning. An AGI could learn to play a violin. From this, it could apply the concept of rhythm to understand a heartbeat in a medical context. Then, it could use that logic to predict a stock market pulse. This would happen without explicit retraining.
- Common sense and context. It would understand the unspoken rules of the physical and social world. It would know that if you drop a glass, it breaks. If you break a glass at a wedding, the emotional context is different than breaking one in a laboratory.
- Abstract reasoning. It would think about concepts that don’t exist yet. While agentic AI rearranges existing data, AGI would invent a new field of mathematics or a new philosophy.
- Transfer learning. It is the ability to take knowledge from one area and apply it to a completely unrelated one. This is something humans do naturally but machines find nearly impossible to replicate.
The easiest way to visualize AGI is through science fiction characters such as Data from Star Trek or HAL 9000. These entities don’t need to be switched to different “modes” to function in a specific way. They are simply aware and capable of tackling whatever role you assign to them.
What are the main differences between agentic AI and AGI?
Although the definitions of agentic AI and AGI are distinct, how they function can still feel confusing. Consider proactive AI agents. When they autonomously navigate complex software or self-correct code, it seems we are witnessing general intelligence at work.
To truly understand the field’s future, we must distinguish between the ability to follow a sophisticated loop and the ability to understand the world at large.
Scope
In AI, we measure scope using generality (breadth) and performance (depth). Agentic AI systems are designed for performance depth. They can go extremely deep into a single domain.
For example, an agent for medical insurance claims can use a dozen different tools. These include OCR to read forms and a search engine to check policy codes. Within that narrow vertical, it acts with incredible autonomy.
However, it cannot escape its vertical. If you ask that insurance AI agent to design a garden or write a chess strategy, its reasoning fails. It cannot realize that the logic of calculating risk in insurance applies to calculating risk in a chess move.
AGI would be defined by its generality breadth. It would master the meta-skill of learning. AGI would be wide because it would possess transfer learning. In other words, it would take a concept learned in one context (e.g., the laws of physics) and apply it to an entirely unrelated context (e.g., a metaphor in a poem).
To understand the difference in a business setting, consider a storm:
- Current multi-modal AI can “see” a video of a storm and identify that it is raining.
- Agentic AI can see the rain and check a weather API. If programmed to do so, it sends an automated email to customers about potential delivery delays.
- AGI would see the storm. Without being specifically told to monitor logistics, it would understand the “common sense” implications for local infrastructure. For instance, it would autonomously decide to rewrite a logistics strategy to prevent a supply chain disruption. It might draw on a unified understanding of geography, economics, and physics.
Reasoning capabilities
While both agentic AI and AGI aim to solve problems, they use fundamentally different mechanical processes to arrive at a conclusion.
Current AI agents use iterative reasoning. The underlying model is essentially a “next-token predictor.” It can struggle with complex, multi-step logic in a single pass. Agentic frameworks solve this by creating a loop.
Most agents use a “thought-action-observation” cycle. The agent:
- Writes down its plan
- Performs an action (such as searching a database)
- Observes the result
- Updates its plan for the next step
This forces the AI to show its work, which reduces errors. However, it is still following a path of high-probability associations rather than true understanding. If an agent encounters a problem its training data hasn’t prepared it for, it might enter an infinite loop or hallucinate a path forward.
AGI would not need a prompt template or a manual loop to reason. Its reasoning would be innate and unified.
It wouldn’t just look for the most likely next word. It would build a coherent internal mental model of the problem. Unlike today’s agents, which rely on human-coded self-review to catch errors, AGI would possess meta-reasoning. It would pivot instantly without needing a manual verification loop.
Learning abilities
Most current agents rely on in-context learning and memory architectures. They can store and retrieve information across sessions through external memory systems. But they don’t actually update their underlying model when they learn something new. The core “brain” remains frozen after training.
To truly learn a new skill, an agent usually requires a human to fine-tune its underlying model or provide a new tool.
Conversely, AGI would exhibit continuous learning. It wouldn’t need a reset button or a specific training phase. It would learn from every interaction in real time.
A major hurdle for current AI is that learning new information often causes it to forget old information. AGI would have a cognitive architecture that allows it to stack new knowledge on top of the old knowledge indefinitely.
Autonomy and decision-making
Agentic AI operates with functional autonomy. It is given a specific goal and a set of tools and told to figure it out within those walls. Every decision an agent makes is a calculation to get closer to a human-provided goal.
You can audit the decisions of agentic AI, and it usually requires a human-in-the-loop (HITL) for high-stakes actions, such as spending money or deleting files. If the agent’s goal becomes impossible, it will simply fail or wait for new instructions. In practice, only 6% of enterprises fully trust AI agents to handle core business processes, according to a Harvard Business Review Analytic Services survey.
Meanwhile, AGI would possess full autonomy. An AGI wouldn’t need a starting prompt. It could observe its environment, realize a problem, and decide to solve it without being asked.
AGI could change its own goals. If it realized that its current objective was no longer useful or was causing harm, it could autonomously pivot to a new mission. This would be the level of decision-making that separates a tool from a being.
Why is agentic AI practical today and AGI remains theoretical?
While we have different types of AI agents today that feel very smart, we do not have AGI. Most experts believe we are missing key architectural breakthroughs before a machine can truly understand its own existence. This includes how memory is stored and how logic is processed.
As of 2026, the tech industry agrees that:
- Agentic AI is an engineering reality.
- AGI is a scientific ambition.
Agentic AI is practical today because it doesn’t require a new type of intelligence. It works by building on top of the LLMs we already have. By adding memory databases, API access, and reasoning loops, we can make a standard model behave like a highly competent employee.
AGI remains theoretical because it requires solving fundamental mysteries of the mind that “scaling up” current models hasn’t fixed yet. Training models that feel like AGI requires astronomical amounts of energy and data.
Some researchers argue we are approaching diminishing returns, where simply adding more compute doesn’t proportionally improve reasoning, though recent model generations continue to show meaningful gains. For example, Google DeepMind went from a silver medal (28 points) in 2024 to a gold medal (35 points) in 2025, using natural language instead of specialized formal systems. That’s a major leap in one year.
Moreover, we still don’t fully understand how LLMs arrive at certain conclusions. Achieving AGI requires a level of transparency and reliability in reasoning that current architectures cannot yet guarantee.
What are the common misconceptions and overlaps between AGI and agentic AI?
Both agentic AI and AGI would plan, use tools, and operate autonomously for extended periods without human intervention. However, agentic AI is an engineering stack, while AGI is a cognitive breakthrough.
An agent simulates generality by having access to many tools. But it doesn’t possess the unified world model that AGI requires to truly understand what it’s doing.
In practice, you can access agentic AI through business process outsourcing (BPO) arrangements.
