Sri Lanka and Bangladesh continue strengthening their partnership in the information technology (IT) and business process outsourcing (BPO) sectors to drive service exports, promote joint ventures, and spark cross-border digital innovation.
On May 14, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner Dharmapala Weerakkody met with the Bangladesh Association of Contact Center and Outsourcing (BACCO) Executive Committee at its Dhaka headquarters. The high-level meeting laid the foundation for new bilateral initiatives to deepen economic cooperation in the fast-growing digital economy.
Forging regional growth through digital synergy
Central to the discussion was a shared vision: positioning IT and BPO as pillars of national development. High Commissioner Weerakkody highlighted the need to build a digitally skilled workforce, invest in infrastructure, and foster knowledge sharing to compete globally.
He invited Bangladeshi firms to participate in Disrupt Asia 2025, Sri Lanka’s flagship ICT summit, emphasizing it as a springboard for partnerships and a showcase for the country’s tech capabilities.
BACCO President Tanvir Ibrahim presented Bangladesh’s thriving IT-BPO sector, which generated $1.4 billion in exports in the past year. He encouraged Sri Lankan firms to explore business opportunities in Bangladesh and extended an invitation to attend the BACCO Summit 2025, scheduled for June in Dhaka.
These mutual initiatives underscore both nations’ commitment to scale their digital services industries through collaboration.
Strategic tech summits and virtual dialogues on the horizon
To formalize the partnership, both countries agreed to convene a virtual trilateral session involving BACCO, the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) of Sri Lanka, and the Sri Lanka Association for Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM). The session will focus on joint training programs, export promotion strategies, and shared innovation projects.
This initiative follows prior discussions with the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), which expressed interest in welcoming Sri Lankan delegations and co-developing projects in software, digital innovation, and IT-enabled services. These cumulative efforts mark a strategic shift toward a more interconnected South Asian tech ecosystem.
As the IT and BPO sectors become vital growth engines, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh set a precedent for regional digital cooperation. By aligning strategies, sharing expertise, and engaging in each other’s premier tech summits, both countries are building a robust, export-driven alliance ready to compete globally.
