South Africa has emerged as a leading outsourcing destination, bolstered by government support. Previously known for humanitarian aid and resource extraction, Africa is currently known for its thriving business process outsourcing (BPO) and information technology (IT) industries, cementing its place as a major participant in global outsourcing.
In March, Vice President Kashim Shettima launched the “Outsource to Nigeria Initiative” (OTNI) to harness Nigeria’s talent and capture a significant share of the $8.79 trillion global BPO market. OTNI will link international companies with Nigeria’s skilled workforce, creating millions of jobs and fueling growth in its BPO and IT sectors.
“Outsourcing is also a strategy to counteract brain drain and channel our talents and skills into reconstructing a Nigeria that works,” Shettima said.
Africa’s BPO sector employs 1.2 million people across over 400 contact centers handling international contracts. Besides Nigeria, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, and Kenya provide cost-effective labor, English proficiency, and skilled professionals, making outsourcing to Africa increasingly advantageous.
Outsourcing opportunities, challenges, and future
While India and the Philippines have strong BPO reputations, Africa’s emerging market provides a scalable and unique alternative. Africa’s BPO sector now includes IT, customer support, software development, data analytics, and language-based services such as translation.
Meanwhile, Ryan Strategic Advisory President Peter Ryan notes that Africa’s advanced skill set justifies the higher cost of outsourced services. “South Africa’s advanced economy means a higher skill set and cost,” Ryan said. He adds that while the Philippines targets high-volume work, South Africa focuses on higher-margin opportunities.
Businesses must assess their needs and partner with reputable local providers to leverage Africa’s outsourcing potential. To ensure sustainable growth, challenges such as infrastructure gaps, political instability, and talent retention must be addressed.
Key factors driving Africa’s outsourcing boom
Several key factors drive the growth of Africa’s outsourcing industry, which is projected to reach $7.54 billion in 2024:
Competitive costs. It is on par with offshore markets and more competitive than many nearshore locations.
Proficient English speakers. English is a primary or secondary language in many African countries.
Broad talent pool. Many young, educated, tech-savvy workers are eager to enter the BPO sector.
Unsaturated markets. Africa allows access to an untapped labor pool with less competition and more selective hiring.
Ethical impact sourcing. The BPO industry provides opportunities for socially responsible practices, creating jobs for disadvantaged individuals.
Prioritized STEM education. A strong focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education fosters future business leaders.
Significant brand presence. Companies such as Amazon, Daimler, Google, and Microsoft are investing in tech-enabled job growth.
Supportive governments. The industry receives significant investments and financial incentives from governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).
Mitigated risks. Diversification from traditional BPO markets reduces risk.
Overall, the outlook for Africa’s outsourcing industry is positive. With ongoing investments in education, infrastructure, and technology, the continent has the potential to become a noteworthy player in the global outsourcing market.
