Ghana has taken a bold step toward becoming Africa’s premier business process outsourcing (BPO) hub with the launch of the Business Outsourcing Services Association of Ghana (BOSAG) on November 13 in Accra.

This initiative is backed by the German Cooperation and Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC). It aims to position the country as a key player in the global BPO and information technology outsourcing (ITO) market, valued at over $1 trillion annually.

Positioning Ghana as a BPO powerhouse

Ghana’s strategic position, highly qualified English-speaking workforce, dependable infrastructure, and steady internet access make it a competitive player in the global outsourcing market. With over 420,000 skilled workers, the country is prepared to serve international firms looking for affordable and scalable outsourcing options.

Speaking at the launch event, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH’s John Duti highlighted the BPO sector’s transformative potential. He mentioned examples such as the Philippines, which was “once heavily dependent on agriculture” before becoming a global outsourcing leader generating $30 billion annually.

“As global companies increasingly look to Africa for outsourcing solutions, Ghana has the potential to replicate the successes of countries like Egypt and South Africa, creating jobs and driving economic growth,” Duti added.

Driving economic growth and collaboration

BOSAG was introduced at the Global Business Services (GBS) Partnership Forum, which GIZ organized as part of its Invest for Jobs program. Stakeholders also unveiled the “GBS Action Plan” at the event. This 12-page roadmap outlines key strategies to attract foreign investment, drive innovation, and establish Ghana as a leading global outsourcing destination.

Yofi Grant, CEO of GIPC, underscored the government’s commitment to leveraging the nation’s advantages to attract international businesses and create a flourishing BPO industry. He vowed to develop a prosperous BPO ecosystem in Ghana and “work diligently to implement the recommendations outlined in the action plan.”

“BOSAG will serve as the industry’s voice, driving collaboration between service providers, the government, and development partners to accelerate growth,” BOSAG Board Chairman Kojo Afedzi Hayford said.

The establishment of BOSAG and its strategic action plan support Ghana’s goal of expanding its digital economy and creating sustainable jobs. The country’s GBS sector employs over 19,000 people.

Ghana’s BPO market is expected to generate $212.7 million in 2024, with projections reaching $275 million by 2029. It hosts major BPO companies, including Concentrix, Majorel, and WebHelp, which provide jobs for over 1,500 young professionals. Other top BPO firms in Ghana include Rancard Solutions, ExpressPay, mNotify, Sunda Internationa, and Oasis Websoft.
