The UK labor market stabilized in March 2026, with job numbers holding steady even as early signs pointed to weaker conditions ahead. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) data shows that payrolled employment fell over the year.
Meanwhile, international hiring plans are rising. Employers are turning to overseas recruitment and distributed workforce models as domestic hiring decelerates. This means a split in strategy, where local demand softens while global hiring activity strengthens.
Labor market stabilizes, but momentum weakens
ONS early estimates show UK payrolled employment stood at 30.3 million in March 2026, down 0.2% from a year earlier, or 65,000 fewer employees. The monthly change was marginal, with a decrease of 11,000 workers compared with February 2026.
Sector data displays uneven performance. Wholesale and retail recorded the largest drop, with 57,000 fewer employees. In contrast, health and social work saw the biggest gain, adding 41,000 hires over the same period.
Hiring outlook turns more cautious across the UK
Building on these employment trends, hiring conditions in the UK point to a more cautious approach in 2026, with mixed signals in labor data. Data from Indeed Hiring Lab for the three months to January 2026 puts unemployment at 5.2%, even as the labor market remained broadly stable.
Wage growth is around 3.8% for regular pay, which shows steady but moderate pressure on salaries. The same report notes a weaker outlook as employers slow hiring and take a more measured approach to workforce planning.
From its UK employment outlook survey performed in 2025, BambooHR data provides a different perspective for decision-makers. Approximately 84% of UK leaders expect growth in 2026, the largest share among surveyed countries. Around 40% of firms report high confidence in their ability to expand internationally.
Hiring strategies shift at home and abroad
Alongside these domestic hiring patterns, more UK businesses are looking at international hiring options. Interest in overseas recruitment is rising as firms look for ways to manage costs and access qualified talent.
Many companies are forming distributed teams to address local labor constraints, particularly where skill gaps or wage pressures persist.
Domestically, recruitment approaches look different. UK Careers Fair data points to changes in how companies approach recruitment. Employers are emphasizing face-to-face hiring and direct engagement with candidates, especially in sectors with stronger growth prospects.
The focus is shifting toward more structured interactions at career events rather than broad, high-volume recruitment activity.
