A new survey from Resume.org shows how artificial intelligence (AI) reshapes the modern workplace, with Gen Z leaning more toward it than any other generation.
The poll involving 8,647 full-time U.S. workers reveals that 21% of Gen Z professionals use ChatGPT regularly, almost double the average across all age groups. Even more striking, 49% say they turn to ChatGPT more often than their managers for help and guidance at work.
Raised in a world of instant information and digital tools, Gen Z sees ChatGPT as a productivity booster and a reliable source of advice, support, and companionship. From generating reports to talking through tough decisions, this AI-powered assistant is filling multiple roles in the workplace.
ChatGPT: coworker, confidant, and therapist
The survey shows that Gen Z workers use ChatGPT beyond expediting tasks. Over half view it as a coworker or assistant, 32% see it as a companion, and 21% describe it as a kind of therapist. Many employees admit to chatting with the tool during slow work periods. About 36% say they use it for entertainment, and 14% turn to it to appear busy.
Gen Z workers also use ChatGPT for personal purposes. Among users who engage in individual conversations, 38% seek help with tough decisions, 29% ask for career advice, and 20% look for support with mental health or emotional challenges. The line between work tools and emotional support is blurring, with ChatGPT taking on both roles.
Why Gen Z prefers ChatGPT over their bosses
Nearly half of Gen Z workers rely on ChatGPT more than their managers, a sign of shifting trust in workplace leadership. Millennials are close behind, with 47% expressing the same preference. Experts say this trend reflects a desire for fast, nonjudgmental feedback and greater autonomy, especially in remote or high-pressure work environments.
“To younger workers, ChatGPT feels accessible, unbiased, and always available,” says Irina Pichura, career coach at Resume.org. “It’s filling gaps that some managers aren’t addressing.”
Workplace experts urge leaders to reconnect with younger employees by fostering open communication, offering mentorship, and focusing on employee growth. While AI isn’t replacing managers, it’s redefining what workers expect from leadership—and putting trust to the test.
